Located on the border between Austria and Slovenia, the station controls the import and export of livestock and animal products. New facilities have now been built for the clearance of lorries. The buildings are laid out parallel to the road to symbolize an “open” border. In view of the extension of the EU, the station will have a life of only 10–15 years. A simple form of construction was chosen, therefore, with steel beams and columns and with ribbed metal sheeting to the walls and roofs, all covered with a layer of plastic. Rainwater runs over the edge of the roof and down the facade, creating a changing pattern that reveals the high air pollution. In time, the streaks will develop into an entirely black surface.
