This new visitors’ centre hugs the hillside of the landscaped Bergpark in Kassel like a low-rise erratic block. All external surfaces of the long, angular structure in exposed concrete have a relief-like texture. From the lower entrance, one proceeds to an exhibition space and up a flight of stairs to a level where a panorama window affords a striking view of the huge Hercules monument nearby. The effect is heightened by the sloping soffit and the upturn in the flooring. Before reaching the top exit to the park, one comes to the museum shop, a casket-like object in dark fumed oak set in the bold sequence of spaces. The use of only three materials and the careful detailing lend the interior a calm, noble atmosphere.
