One of the first developments in Brünnen, a new urban district for 2,600 inhabitants in the western part of Berne, was the Westside leisure and shopping centre completed in 2008. Designed by Daniel Libeskind to attract around three and a half million customers a year, the 141,500 m2 complex is situated close to the existing motorway exit and a new suburban railway station. While the mall was constructed over the autobahn, the multiplex cinema and the Bernaqua adventure baths are laid out in two wing structures parallel to the motorway. The eight-storey hotel rises above the shopping centre, setting an urban accent. To the east, the complex is rounded off by a senior citizens’ residence, containing 95 dwellings and 20 nursing rooms.
