The Whitechapel Art Gallery is a Grade II Listed Building designed by Harrison Townsend in 1898. The existing Galleries are recognised for their exceptional qualities, but the building fabric required repair and environmental conditions needed upgrading to modern gallery standard. The new accommodation broadly includes an additional gallery, storage areas, loading facilities, a workshop and goods lift; new lecture/film, education spaces, a new cafe, all to be used independently to the gallery; new bookshop, extra office space; mechanical and electrical services, lighting and sun control
