There are many ways to reduce costs in architecture. Only very few lead to such a convincing result as in the case of the building for a social enterprise in Mechelen. The architects developed a concept based on a simple construction principle and a very high degree of construction work undertaken by the clients themselves.
The new building comprises about 315 m2 of usable
area and was realised with a construction budget of only 613 000 euro. The cooperation between the social workshop ’t Atelier and the Belgian architecture team of dmvA has been ongoing for 20 years. ’t Atelier offers people with different disabilities the opportunity to work in a bicycle and wood workshop. The architects were able to repeatedly integrate their partner’s woodworking
products into their designs.
