Natural stone quarries have a long tradition in Jinyun in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang. More than a thousand years ago, people were mining stone from the mountains using simple tools. Agriculture was nearly impossible because of the dense forests. Then as now, the stone was mainly used to build houses. Today, there are over 3,000 small quarries dug deep into the ground.
