Brick facades in shades of red, ochre, brown and anthracite are ubiquitous in the town of Hasselt in eastern Belgium. This is especially true of the district around the former beguinage in the north-east of the inner city. Since 2002 one of the town’s creative centres has been based here: Z33, whose name is derived from the address, Zuivelmarkt 33, is an exhibition centre for contemporary art, architecture and design which, while it does not have its own collection, offers a rich programme of visiting exhibitions.
