In Dübendorf, on the eastern edge of Zurich, the site of the former Zwicky spinning works is being transformed into a new urban district. Situated between an autobahn slip road and a railway viaduct, the area suffers from high noise pollution, but it provides land that, for Zurich, is reasonable in price.
For the southern part of the site, the architects Schneider Studer Primas drew up plans for an urban and architectural ensemble that responds to the situation and provides affordable housing. For the three developers, including the building and housing cooperative Kraftwerk1, the architects conceived structures that can be used in a flexible form. Suitable for both residential and working purposes, the scheme comprises 280 dwellings and 5,900 m2 for commercial uses.
