The reuse of existing buildings is a central aim of sustainable construction, since it is the most effective way of conserving resources. It is all the more beneficial when a derelict industrial site in a district affected by social deprivation is transformed into a vivid neighbourhood. The Montag Urban Spaces Foundation, which supports building public welfare, substantially contributed to the transformation of the former textile factory in the district of Oberbarmen by proposing a standard-setting development concept. The foundation offers funding for equal opportunity urban development where the participation of users begins early on. Raumwerk Architekten were responsible for the feasibility study. During its creation, neighbourhood representatives were invited to contribute. They cooperated in the development of the program and continue to serve as neighbourhood interlocutors.
