At a height of 3,000 metres above sea level near Leadville in the Rocky Mountains lies the Colorado Outward Bound School. This non-profit educational institution offers adventures in nature such as mountaineering, rock climbing and ski tours. To house the course instructors, 21 mini-cabins have been erected as a simple form of accommodation here at the foot of the Sawatch Mountains. The huts are loosely set out in the open pinewoods. Raised above the ground on piers, they seem to hover above the rocky slope.

In 2015, the Colorado Building Workshop of Colorado University erected the first 14 cabins as non-insulated summer retreats. In the following year, seven further huts were built, this time with themal insulation that allows them to be used all year round. With a size between 13 and 19 m², the huts were designed for one to two persons in slightly different forms by various student teams. The planning was based on a simple, economical form of construction, using durable materials and with a high degree of prefabrication.
