In the northeast of Zurich, between modern office towers, post war housing blocks and a waste incinerator, the largest cooperative housing development in the city to-date has been created. A group of over fifty Zurich cooperatives, set up in 2007 under the title ‘More than Living’, joined together to act as a unified client body for the project. Their aim was to establish a high quality, mixed-use district for 1,300 people.
The master plan originated in an architectural competition which was won by two architectural firms, Futurafrosch and Duplex, with their innovative typological proposals. Thirteen large ? up to 32 meters deep ? residential blocks are spread over a large L- shaped site, located adjacent to the Leutschenbach school by Christian Kerez, completed in 2009. The designs for the thirteen blocks come from five different architectural firms; the competition winners along with three other award winners in the competition.
