It certainly costs a lot of time and money to develop innovative solutions. As a rule, an architect can’t do that without a large infrastructure. If clients had to pay for the time I spend developing experimental things, it would be very expensive. That’s why we sometimes undertake the requisite trials ourselves, without charging for them. We tested various kinds of insulating material for the Naked House, for example, even cutting it and sealing it in membranes ourselves. Unusual solutions of this kind can’t be developed within the scope of a normal contract sum. A lot of trials are necessary. Andreas Gabriel
