Set on slender steel columns 13 cm in diameter, the gleaming 400-metre-long aluminium-covered roof of the Grace Farms centre is a wafer-thin strip that seems to float above the ground, following the undulations of the site like a river. The creation of the laminated timber roof beams as up to 30-metre-long units gives some idea of Sanaa’s perfectionist aspirations.

The bulging forms of the curved, unframed panes of double glazing enclose various user areas. Standing on an 80-acre site in New Canaan, the complex is devoted to “nature, the arts, justice, community and faith” and offers a diverse programme that ranges from basketball and nature excursions, to arts events, contributions on law and religious services. The two ends of the structure are marked by a sports hall and an auditorium.
