The museum, in the direct neighbourhood of the Washington Monument, documents the history of the African-American people in the USA. The building contains galleries, theatres, offices and archives.

The objective of the architect’s design was to make meaningful reference to the historical location while, at the same time, reflecting America’s considerable African inheritance. Three important elements define the design: the crown-like overall form, the long, open canopy at the entrance from the grounds and the bronze, diaphanous building envelope.
