With its new city ring, Copenhagen has extended its underground rail network, consisting hitherto of only two lines, to cover the entire inner-city area. Two parallel ring tunnels 16 km long have been created beneath the partially pile-supported structures of Copenhagen.

Architects and engineers developed a modular design system for the 17 new stations that made both the planning and construction particularly cost-effective. Roof lights bring daylight into the large, individually clad station halls, which reflect the specific urban context in their coloration and the materials used.
