The Augustinum has a long tradition in Stuttgart. It opened its first residence – the first of its kind – back in 1972 and is so popular thanks to its philosophy (“live independently – be well taken care of”), that the time had come for a second campus. Now retirees can rent a unit on Killesberg – a hill not only renowned as the home of the Weissenhof Estate, but also considered one of Stuttgart’s top neighbourhoods – in this well furnished residence. The size of the units ranges from 46 m2 efficiency apartments to 114 m2 penthouse flats. The amenities include a restaurant, café and concert hall, as well as wellness area and medical care. These auxiliary areas are situated on the lower levels, enclosed by fully glazed facades whose thermal glazing has a blue sheen. The base’s green roofs interlock with the outdoor spaces and connect the eight apartment towers, which rise, following the topography, from west to east. They appear to be free-standing cubes, and allow views through the site to the buildings in the neighbouring Weissenhof Estate and to the lush nearby hillside. Loggias, cut deep into the facade and offset from floor to floor, animate the building massing.
